World class research and impact

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is one of the largest and most successful of its kind in the UK, with some 300 staff, including over 90 full-time and associate academic staff and 100 research staff, supported by over £50M in current research contract funding, and with 86% of our research rated World Class or Internationally Excellent in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment.

The School is home to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Meteorology (and, from August 2016, the new Department of Computer Science) and hosts major international research centres, including the NERC National Centre for Earth Observation, key parts of the NERC National Centre for Atmospheric Science, and the University's Walker Institute for Climate System Research. We run a consultancy arm, our Statistical Services Centre, and a spinoff company from our Centre for the Mathematics of Human Behaviour. Read more...
